APRN Summit (Registration Required) Leveraging the latest educational guidelines to improve advanced practice nursing competency

Abstract Text:

Purpose: The session will strengthen educator and preceptor utilization of the foundational education documents from AACN, NONPF, and NANN to transition to competency-based education (CBE).
Background and Importance of the Topic: AACN’s The Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education and NTF’s Standards for Quality Nurse Practitioner Education represent best practices for NP program development, support, education, and evaluation. The Curriculum Guidelines and Education Competencies for Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Programs published in 2023 shares the neonatal specific standards. National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties' curricular taskforce has further identified core NP competencies and has an implementation guide forthcoming. The guide includes input from NANN and focuses on what students learn and can demonstrate, with domains, concepts, and spheres of care woven throughout. Faculty and preceptors can offer frequent active experiences over time to teach and evaluate, building student confidence and expertise in transferrable advanced-level nursing competencies.
What Will be Covered: The session will highlight the updated educational documents and then pivot to actionable items for all NP's. Backward course design as a process to meet CBE will be detailed; activities and outcomes which measure competency will be explored. Leveling of content as well as formative and summative evaluations will be discussed. Learners will experience individualized practice utilizing their new knowledge.
Future Directions: As the pedagogy of nursing education pivots from teacher-centric and time-focused to learner focused and competency driven, educators who are prepared with an understanding of backward design with an outcome lens will be poised to lead nursing forward.

Needs Assessment and Presentation Description: American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s (AACN’s) The Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education, the National Task Force’s (NTF) 2022 Standards for Quality Nurse Practitioner Education, and The Curriculum Guidelines and Education Competencies for Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Programs represent best practices for NNP program development, support, education, and evaluation. The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) curricular taskforce, with input from NNP’s, has an implementation guide forthcoming. Faculty and preceptors must begin the pivot to wholistic competency-based education and assessment. This session will act as both a primer and a workshop for educators and preceptors to work towards these important curricular shifts.
