Preconference: NRP® Skills Hands-On Workshop (Registration Required)

This preconference workshop is brought to you by the AAP, who have selected members of the Neonatal Resuscitation Program Steering Committee as the workshop’s faculty. Detailed workshop schedule provided below.

This 4 ½ -hour Skills Hands-On Workshop has been specifically designed for NRP providers working in all levels of neonatal care to practice and hone their Neonatal Resuscitation Program® (NRP®) skills and critical emergency responses in a safe and encouraging setting. Employing “Iron-Sharpens-Iron” methodology, the creators of this course have designed an interactive rotation of skills stations for learners to complete as they network with other neonatal care professionals and learn from expert facilitators as well as from each other. Learning stations include Teamwork Skills, Airway Skills, including LMA placement and PPV assessment, Medication Preparation, and Neonatal Code Simulation practice. Participants will leave feeling better prepared, more confident, and excited to share what they’ve learned in their workplaces when they return home.

Attendees will spend 45 minutes practicing at each of the following stations:
  • Team Work Skills: Participants will engage in an interactive NRP Key Behavioral Skills workshop, collaboratively critiquing video of critical incident response and practicing their own responses as they relate to team performance and effectiveness.
  • LMA & Airway Skills Stations: Participants will gain knowledge about common neonatal airway challenges and achieve hands-on experience in neonatal positive pressure ventilation (PPV), including laryngeal mask airway placement and objective PPV technique assessment.
  • Medication & UVC Insertion Stations: Participants will describe NRP medications, dosages, routes, and indications and will practice medication preparation during emergencies, including attaining emergency access and umbilical venous catheter insertion.
  • Neonatal Code Simulation: Participants will take part in a safe and realistic mid-fidelity NRP Code Simulation to practice their neonatal resuscitation skills, including: emergency preparation and set-up, team function, pre-brief, NRP initial steps, respiratory support, advanced measures, cardiac compressions, code medications, continuing care, and situation debrief. Simulation participation will increase competency, confidence and comfort level of NRP providers as they incorporate skills and knowledge gained at this hands-on workshop where they practice.

Learning Outcome(s):
