Neonatal nurses are essential to the healthcare team and spend the most time with NICU families; they are often whom NICU families remember the most! In this presentation, Dr. Jessica Daigle, a NICU hospitalist and mom of a former 31 wk preemie, delves into the critical role of neonatal nurses in supporting NICU families, particularly those in underrepresented communities, by addressing biases and improving communication in the NICU. She discusses that by understanding the unique challenges faced by these families and the impact of bias on their experiences, neonatal nurses can enhance their ability to provide culturally competent care, which has the potential to impact families long after they have left the unit. Through real-life examples and practical strategies, Dr. Daigle empowers neonatal nurses to show up as the leaders they are and foster an inclusive and supportive NICU environment by recognizing and challenging biases everyday. Ultimately, by prioritizing equity and inclusivity in their communication and interactions with families, nurses play a vital role in promoting positive outcomes and experiences for ALL NICU families.
