This presentation will leave nurses excited to take on the challenge of providing care to neonates diagnosed with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). Fewer pregnant mothers are being encouraged to terminate CDH pregnancies. It is important that Neonatal Intensive Care Unit staff understand these babies can have excellent survival and outcomes when they receive high quality care from a team that BELIEVES in their potential. Dr. Stone and Mrs. Perkins share what they’ve learned through many years of working in high volume CDH centers with excellent survival and outcomes. We hope you leave this presentation invigorated and ready to tackle CDH in your home ICU. Don’t stop believing!

Learning Outcome(s):

At the conclusion of this presentation, the learner will be able to:
  1. Attendees will have an understanding of predictive prenatal testing used to determine severity of fetuses with congenital diaphragmatic hernia.
  2. Attendees will have an understanding of the spectrum of severity in congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH).
  3. Attendees will be able to verbalize the different types of ventilation used in the treatment of CDH.
  4. Attendees will have an understanding of the potential for survival and positive outcomes in fetuses diagnosed with CDH.
  5. Attendees will learn ECMO can be a positive therapy for neonates with CDH and should not be avoided when needed.
