Dr. Griffith's research goal is to use behavioral epigenetics to advance individualized management of developmental risks associated with early life toxic stress. Her current K23 research program will advance neonatal care knowledge by determining the extent to which a stress-related epigenetic mechanism (measured by DNA methylation of NR3C1 and HSD11B2 gene promoters) compromises progression of oral feeding skill development. This is a significant scientific contribution in that timely achievement of oral feeding skill development improves infant nutrition crucial for growth and development, decreases length of hospital stay and healthcare costs, and supports optimal parent-infant interaction during feeding.
