The incidence of seizures in the neonatal period is considerably higher than at any other point in life, making this one of the most common medical emergencies in the NICU and therefore putting neonatal nurses at the forefront. The identification of such seizures is not trivial, however, and clinical recognition of seizures is primarily based on observation of stereotypical movements, which can be subtle and difficult to identify. As such, seizures frequently go undetected, wreaking havoc with the developing brain and causing irreparable damage, ranging from long-term developmental delay, to childhood epilepsy, to contributing to mortality. For the hour-long session (45 minutes presentation; 15 minutes Q&A), a board-certified child neurologist and a clinical neuroscientist will discuss the challenges and potential solutions surrounding the automated identification of neonatal seizures in the NICU.
