As we continue to advance our technology and knowledge, we have been pushing the age of viability. Understanding how these micropremies (and their tiny bodies) are different from our other NICU patients is extremely important. We all know neonates and pediatric patients aren’t just small adults and the same could be said for these our micropremies. In this discussion, we will discuss the specific differences in their pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, how the medications we use can affect them and our hopes for future research into this field. Come listen if you’re interested in learning more about these little guys!
Learning Outcome(s):
At the conclusion of this presentation, the learner will be able to:
Review pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the extremely preterm infant.
Compare and contrast medication administration consideration with extremely preterm infants and term neonates.
Analyze current literature related to specific medications used in extremely preterm infant.
