Anxiety and/or depression affect up to 1 in 5 women during the perinatal period (and up to 1 in 3 high risk populations). Anxiety and depression are the #1 complication of pregnancy and childbirth. Not all women are educated about, screened for, or referred to appropriate resources. Seventy-five percent of women who experience MMH symptoms go untreated. Women at increased risk include immigrant women, women of color, military mothers, and parents with babies in the NICU. Risks of untreated MMH include substance abuse, preterm labor, low birthweight, NICU admissions, breastfeeding issues, suicidal behavior, and delayed infant cognitive development. Not all health care professionals know how to discuss and screen for parental mental health issues, nor how to help parents start on the path to recovery.
