Advancing Neonatal Precision Health Literacy Through NICU-RN Genomics Awareness (204)

Abstract Text: Purpose of the Session: To facilitate interactive discussion and demonstration of educational strategies to promote NICU-RN genomics literacy.
Background & Importance of the Topic: Rapid genome sequencing (rGS) for critically ill newborns in the NICU is an evidence-based first-tier testing strategy to hasten diagnosis and effective treatment, plus reduce length of stay and healthcare costs. Despite advances in precision healthcare, nurses demonstrate limited engagement due to a well-documented genomics knowledge gap. NICU-RNs are ideally positioned to integrate genomics through assessment and documentation of evolving patient phenotypes, complex care coordination/follow-up, and culturally congruent education and support of families. While the multidisciplinary team is a NICU hallmark, equitable infusion and sustainable genomics-informed care is hampered by inadequate nursing education requisite to competency. Recognizing angst is often associated with learning genomics, combined with competing priorities for staff development, an interprofessional NICU team collaborated to develop an innovative, low cost, genomics awareness campaign as an unintimidating strategy to upskill and entice NICU nurses to learn more about the neonatal rGS program at a large urban academic medical center. NICU-RN impressions of the campaign are consistently positive.
Description of What Will be Covered: This interactive session will outline creative educational strategies and online resources used to support successful implementation of a NICU-RN Genomics Awareness Campaign. Established national and international genomics awareness events harnessed for recurring exposure to neonatal-relevant genomics will be highlighted.
Future Directions: Research is needed to determine effective methods for achieving NICU-RN genomic competency.
