Purpose: This session facilitates open discussions on the complex interplay between shift lengths, fatigue impact, and insights gained from the lived experiences of neonatal nurse practitioners (NNPs). The primary purpose is to address recent research results while encouraging a collaborative conversation to understand and navigate the challenges presented by prolonged shifts.

Background: NNPs often work prolonged hours, with 41% reporting working 24-hour shifts. Our recent study aimed to assess the impact of shift length and fatigue on the competence level of the NNP. Current recommendations rely solely on evidence from other fields, posing concerns for managing emergent situations following prolonged shifts.

Importance of Topic: Addressing the impact is crucial for patient safety, healthcare worker satisfaction, and NNP well-being. This session highlights the necessity of dialogue from those directly affected for progress and research limitations by gathering candid thoughts from practicing NNPs.
