Newborn Tetanus: An International Challenge with Local Implications (207)

Risk of tetanus in the US is rare, but not unheard of, due to hygienic processes and maternal vaccination. The global risk in Low Income Countries (LIC) is much higher. The case of a baby treated by US and local nursing faculty in Sierra Leone will be discussed. Awareness of diagnosis and management is necessary when we have home deliveries, patients desiring homeopathic care without vaccine use, patients from the Plain (Amish) community, and patients who come from abroad who may have not been immunized. Of note treatment and recovery does not afford future immunity.

At the conclusion of this presentation, the learner will be able to:
  1. Describe the risk factors for tetanus exposure in infants worldwide.
  2. Relate the treatment protocols for tetanus in infants in low and high resource settings.
  3. Discuss the sequelae of post tetanus treatment in the US and abroad.
